The movie star who opened a Hawaiian dress shop in the little Olympic cottage behind the liquor store was Candy Bergen. She was a friend of mine back then. Remember her? Her father was Edgar Bergen. He modeled Charley McCarthy after me. But when he found out I was too dumb, he gave me another name, Mortimer Snerd. I told her that she was going to be a famous movie star and she said, “Pooh pooh! I don’t give a hoot for the Hollywood crowd.” I told her that they will FORCE her to be a movie star…and they did. She was inordinately beautiful and they did not allow her to escape their clutches. I would sit in her shop and visit with her for hours. She gave me a few Hawaiian shirts when she closed her business and I gave them to my current girl friend. I am fairly certain that it was in 1960 when this happened.
